People hearing about Xylitol for the first time often wonder, “Is Xylitol good for you?” I first heard about Xylitol six months ago. Since then, I have done numerous studies to find out whether or not it is healthy for your body and your teeth. This article should help you to know whether or not it is good for you.
History of Xylitol
Xylitol started being used in Finland after the Second World War. Sugar was scarce, and people used a natural “bark” sugar as a substitute. About 30 years after people started using it, studies were done comparing people who consumed Xylitol, with the ordinary population. The results of the studies were quite significant. In some cases, people were able to reduce the amount of cavities that they had by 70% to 80%. Today, a lot of countries endorse Xylitol as a proven natural method of cavity prevention.
Xylitol is a natural sugar substitute. Most sugar substitutes are synthetically manufactured. Xylitol however, comes from natural sources like tree bark, or corn. Xylitol can also be found naturally in your body. Xylitol contains two properties which make it very good for your body.
First of all, Xylitol is non-fermentable. With most sugars, they start to ferment right when you eat them. Bacteria in your mouth metabolizes sugar and your mouth can become acidic very quickly. When you have an acidic mouth, it demineralizes your teeth and makes it very easy for you to get cavities. By consuming Xylitol instead of sugar, you will keep your mouth from becoming acidic.
By neutralizing the pH in your mouth, you can stop your teeth from demineralizing. I have done a few experiments where I have tested the pH of my mouth before and after eating sugar. Your mouth can stay acidic for up to one half hour after consuming sugar. However, if you follow it with Xylitol, then the pH of your mouth is neutralized almost immediately.
The next reason why Xylitol is healthy for your body is because it helps reduce the amount of harmful bacteria in your mouth. Harmful bacteria attach themselves to the Xylitol. People who consume it on a regular basis can reduce the amount of Streptococcus Mutans bacteria in their mouth. This makes it a lot harder for cavities to develop.
